| The purpose of the
Buford Lanier Woman's Club is to foster
mutual counsel and helpfulness within the community and to unite
the influence of women in promoting education, civic, social and
moral advancement and to support the Tallulah Falls School. The
club is nonpartisan, nonsectarian, and nonprofit.
The Buford Lanier Woman's Club is affiliated with the
Georgia Federation of Women's Clubs
and the General Federation of
Women's Clubs. The club was organized in 1923.
Our efforts are divided into six departments: arts,
conservation, education, home life, international affairs, and
public affairs. Members may join any or all of these
departments.
The BLWC has its general meeting on the second Wednesday of the
month, at 9:30 a.m., all months except July and August.
Membership is offered to all women living in Buford, Georgia and
the surrounding areas.
The following is an excerpt from
Gwinnett, A Little Above Atlanta by Elliott Brack:
"The second woman's club in Gwinnett was founded
in Buford in 1923 as the Buford Woman's Club with 67 members.
It is now called Buford Lanier Woman's Club. Its aim is to
foster mutual counsel and helpfulness within the community and
to unite the influence of women in promoting education, civic,
social and moral advancement and to support the Tallulah Falls
School. The club is non-partisan, non-sectarian, and
non-profit.
The club has for years been a vital part of Buford life, and has
a significant record of achievement in many areas. The club
has, on the average, been a large one, with many varied
interests. The membership in 2008 totaled 50 women.
In recent years, the club has hosted a Home Tour in the spring.
The homes are varied, including mansions, cottages, lake homes,
traditional homes and houseboats.
The club has a history of conservation, working to enhance the
community through maintenance and seasonal plantings in the
Grace Harris Garden on Main Street in Buford; recycling;
planting trees in Buford parks in observance of Arbor Day;
supporting Lake Lanier Association and participating in
ShoreSweep. It also supports with monetary donations Gwinnett
Clean and Beautiful, Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper, Friends of
the State Botanical Garden, and National Arbor Day Foundation.
The club provides camp scholarship money to Elachee Nature
Science Center; and pays for subscriptions to KIND News, an
environmental publication, for two local school libraries.
Some other projects the club is involved with include honoring
firefighters and police with cookies and cakes during the winter
months; scholarships for qualified graduating female students
who will be attending college in Georgia; donations to the
Gwinnett Children's Shelter; parties for Grandparents' Day
and Christmas for residents at Laurel Baye Health Care, with
special gifts for veterans; and support for Gwinnett County
Relay for Life, the Buford/Sugar Hill Library, North Gwinnett
County Food Co-op, Camp Sunshine, and Hi-Hope Center. It also
provides docents and other volunteers for the Buford Museum and
other civic projects.
The club also donates nationally and internationally to Child
Outreach International, Operation Smile, Operation Christmas
Child, Global Health Action, March of Dimes, and Juvenile
Diabetes, among many charities."
