CONSERVATION DEPARTMENT

The three general areas that the Conservation Department oversees are Special Projects, Beautification, and Resource Conservation.

Our objectives are to educate members and the community about the importance of preserving natural resources and community beautification.

 

I. SPECIAL PROJECTS - PRESERVATION AND REVITALIZATION OF CITY, STATE, AND NATIONAL PARKS
  • Continue maintenance and seasonal plantings at Grace Harris park in downtown Buford. 
  • Install drought tolerant garden at Buford-Sugar Hill Library and host a lecture on drought tolerant plantings when garden completed
  • Install entry garden at the Forsyth County Humane Society
  • Add more colorful plantings at Buford city sign
  • Create a schoolyard habitat at a local elementary school
  • Support local JMG group with their butterfly garden
  • Investigate site for future meditation garden, perhaps using our “club tree”
  • Discuss future BLWC garden to be incorporated into the new town center of Sugar Hill with the city manager
 
II. BEAUTIFICATION
A. Participate in Community Beautification Projects
  • Adopt a street/park
  • Participate in local clean-up of Lake Lanier shoreline
  • Work with Public Affairs committee to beautify Buford downtown amphitheater and surrounding area
  • Tour  State Botanical Garden for garden week in June
  • Enter Keep America Beautiful contest with our special projects
  • Encourage students to find ways to beautify their surroundings at school and at home
 
B. Research and Implement Tree Planting/Preservation Projects
  • Educate members about tree choices and “elect” a club tree for future plantings
  • Nominate a historic tree and have it placed on National Registry
  • Arboretum walk-educate members about  the diversity found in Georgia
  • Observe Arbor Day, involve a local school, local government
  • Provide workshop (at Arbor Day celebration) to teach how to plant trees and choose appropriate tree for each site
  • Encourage members to join the National Arbor Day Foundation and to plant their seedlings. Give tree seedlings as door prizes.
III. RESOURCE CONSERVATION - . EDUCATION, AWARENESS, AND PRACTICE
  • Host workshop for members to make their own bird nesting boxes. Provide information on bird species and their preferences. Extra boxes to go to schoolyard habitat
  • Include environmental news in club newsletter (Conservation Corner)
  • Participate in Kids and Kindness program at Buford Elementary and Buford Academy by providing subscriptions
  • Using USDA “Backyard Conservation” booklet encourage members and neighbors to begin a resource conservation program in their own yards.
  • Educate members and friends about participating in the recycling loop
  • Celebrate America Recycles Day November 15 by developing a library display about recycling
  • Collaborate with the Forsyth County Humane Society in a joint project
  • Educate members about legislation affecting the Humane Society and encourage members to volunteer at the shelter
  • Encourage members to recycle by providing a tally sheet at monthly meetings and providing bin for collection of cfl bulbs to be taken to local building store
  • Invite an environmentalist to speak at meeting about the local issue of storm water run-off and water conservation
  • Invite a local expert on hummingbirds to speak at monthly meetings
