CONSERVATION DEPARTMENT

The Conservation Department has projects promoting increasing awareness of energy options, preserving natural resources and education of waste material.

The three general areas that the Conservation Department oversees are Special Projects, Beautification, and Resource Conservation

I. SPECIAL PROJECTS - PRESERVATION AND REVITALIZATION OF CITY, STATE, AND NATIONAL PARKS
  • Continue maintenance and seasonal plantings at Grace Harris park, downtown Buford.
  • Do Nature Walk series in conjunction with Ramblin' Wrecks in fall, winter, and spring to investigate local habitats and wet lands.
  • Celebrate Earth Day with a school (perhaps Buford Elementary) in April.
  • Promote certification of members' yards as wildlife habitats through National Wildlife Federation.
II. BEAUTIFICATION
A. Participate in Community Beautification Projects
  • Work with city to establish community garden site for people to grow vegetables and share with the hungry.
  • Have members buy flower seeds on sale at end of season. Donate flower seeds to Buford Academy garden. Have members bring perennials (when dividing in fall) to donate to school.
  • Organize a work day to clean shores on coves of all members who live on Lake Lanier. Recycle findings when possible.
  • Include environmental news in club newsletter with recycling tips and simple action ideas.
B. Research and Implement Tree Planting/Preservation Projects
  • Plant trees to honor women of achievement in our community. May be one in conjunction with city in new park across from Bona Allen special events facility or in area with proposed bronze horse statue. Could provide a park bench near statue
  • Work with Gwinnett police and Gwinnett Clean and Beautiful on a "Graffiti Hurts" program and anti-littering education (including cigarette butts) at schools.
III. RESOURCE CONSERVATION - . EDUCATION, AWARENESS, AND PRACTICE
  • Invite a park ranger (state or national) or a naturalist like Charles Seabrook to speak at a meeting. Could invite other members of community to attend.
  • Participate in Kids and Kindness program at Buford elementary and Buford Academy.
  • Using USDA "Backyard Conservation" booklet encourage members and neighbors to begin a resource conservation program in their own yards.
  • Educate members and friends about participating in the recycling loop.
  • Celebrate America Recycles Day, November 15.
