CONSERVATION COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAM

 

Our objectives are to work with our partners: The Humane Society of the United States and Keep America Beautiful, Inc., to research, plan and implement projects, programs, and advocacy based on the interests of our members and the needs of our community.

 

Participate in Community Beautification Projects
  • Continue maintenance and seasonal plantings at Grace Harris garden in downtown Buford
  • Install a drought tolerant garden at the Buford-Sugar Hill library and enter the garden in Gwinnett Clean and Beautiful contest
  • Install entry garden at the Forsyth County Humane Society
  • Add more colorful plantings at the entrance to Buford
  • Investigate site for future meditation garden, perhaps using our “club tree”
  • Work with local school to encourage students to beautify their school grounds
  • Investigate the Master Gardener Program and collaborate with them on beautification projects
  • Support the State Botanical garden
  • Collaborate with Public Issues Community Service Program committee on planting patriotic flowers for the summer season in downtown Buford
  • Enter a project in the Keep America Beautiful contest in April
Research and Implement Tree-Planting/Preservation and Reforestation Projects
  • Explore the National Registry of Historic Trees and nominate a historic tree
  • Plant trees at local school to honor Presidents’ Day
  • Celebrate Arbor Day - give out tree seedlings to members and teach them how to plant a tree, educate them about tree choices
  • Plan a walk through The Atlanta Botanical Garden
  • Educate members about tree choices and “elect” a club tree for future plantings.
  • Encourage members to join the National Arbor Day Foundation and to plant the trees given with membership
  • Discuss future BLWC garden to be incorporated into the new town center of Sugar Hill
Organize and Participate in Litter Prevention Projects

Organize regular highway clean-up groups through the Adopt-A-Road program

Climate Change

Encourage members to investigate their carbon footprint

General Education, Awareness, and Practice
  • Write articles on environmental issues for member newsletter
  • Conduct educational program regarding the importance of water conservation at local library
  • Provide environmental education opportunities for children by participating in the Junior Master Gardener program at local school
  • Educate members about conserving energy by distributing Energy Star brochures
  • Educate members about the importance of Backyard Conservation by distributing the booklet produced by the USDA
  • Create a school-yard habitat at local school
  • Educate members about the recycling loop by distributing information at meetings.
  • Educate children about the importance of recycling by participating in a recycling program on America Recycles Day
  • Educate members about legislation affecting the Humane Society and encourage members to donate items and volunteer at a local shelter
  • Invite an environmentalist to speak at meeting about the local issue of storm water run-off and water conservation.
  • Encourage recycling by providing a tally sheet at monthly meetings and providing bins for collection of cfl bulbs.
