INTERNATIONAL OUTREACH COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAM

The impoverished and the needy are all around us, both here in the United States and around the world. The International Affairs Committee is BLWC’s link to provide whatever assistance we can to alleviate some of the hunger, help destitute and deprived children, and raise awareness of these conditions. Not only does it help those people, it makes us feel better for doing so and projects a positive image of both America and the state of Georgia.

The International Affairs Department has projects promoting understanding and acceptance of all peoples and providing international aid.

Our three areas of concern are Outreach for Children, United Nations Program and Special Projects.

Our 3 GFWC Partnership Programs:

  • CARE.  In April 2010, BLWC donated $200 in support of sending young girls to school for a year as part of CARE's Hope for Children program.

  • Heifer Project International - The Heifer Project Gift Ark offers shelter to families battered by the storms of hunger and poverty that are still raging around our world.  A generous gift launches a parade of farm animals on a voyage to wherever they're needed most.  The price of a Gift Ark includes the purchase/transport of quality animals and the training/support Heifer Project gives recipients.  They learn how to maintain a sustainable source of food and income.  Contributions to the Gift Ark program are symbolic and represent a contribution to the entire mission of HPI.  In September 2010 BLWC donated $300.00 to the project.

  • Operation Smile International-This project supports surgical reconstruction of Cleft lip or Cleft Palate deformities in children.  BLWC has donated to this cause for the past several years.  The donation is $1,500 to cover operations for four children.  Much of the medical, nursing care and travel costs are covered by volunteers and donated services.  Our donation was $1,500 in October  2010.

COLLABORATION PROGRAMS

  • Global Health Action - Haitian Goat Project.  This project supports "healthy people, healthy communities, a healthy world" by donating a pregnant goat to families and farmers to teach the value of raising goats as a source of money, food and milk.  People get training in workshops in their own community.  $180 buys a pregnant goat.  In December 2010, BLWC donated $360 for two goats.

  • Nepalese Youth Opportunity Foundation (NYOF). This project supports NYOF's mission of buying piglets to give to parents who otherwise would have to indenture their daughters to gain enough money to feed the rest of the family.  When raised, the piglets will provide an equivalent sum of money and their daughters will be able to stay at home with the rest of the family and attend school.  In May 2010, BLWC donated $250 for two piglets.

  • Save the Children-Baby Cap Project- BLWC member, Lynda Fitzsimmons, started this project in2008 where she suggested knitters come to her home and use their extra yarn to knit baby caps.  In 2010 they sent 42 caps that were knitted and sent to newborns in disadvantaged countries.

  • Save the Children- Dudca Dolls Project-Lynda expanded her project for 2010 into making 12 Dudca Dolls that were sent to Kenya.  These dolls were given to children suffering from Aids.

  • Operation Christmas Child/SAMARITIN'S PURSE PROJECT. This is the GaFWC'S President, Sharon Carter's, SPECIAL PROJECT for 2010 and 2011.  Our club collected 30 shoe boxes from our members.  They were filled with items for boys and girls of all ages.  They were collected by Anna Medvedeff, Chairman, and taken to an OCC site where they were sent to children all over the world.

  • In February 2010 BLWC sent a check for $500.00 to the General Federation of Women's Clubs for the Haiti Disaster Relief Fund.
