INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS DEPARTMENT
The impoverished and the needy are all around us, both here in the
United States and around the world. The International Affairs Committee
is
BLWC’s
link to provide whatever assistance we can to alleviate some of the
hunger, help destitute and deprived children, and raise awareness of
these conditions. Not only does it help those people, it makes us feel
better for doing so and projects a positive image of both America and
the state of Georgia.
The International Affairs Department has projects promoting
understanding and acceptance of all peoples and providing international
aid.
Our three areas of concern are Outreach for Children, United Nations
Program and Special Projects.

-
Operation Smile -
Program to surgically remove deformity (hare
lip)from children. BLWC has donated to this cause for the
past several years. The donation is $1,500 to cover operations
for four children. Much of the medical, nursing care and
travel costs are covered by volunteers and donated services.
Our donation was raised from $750 to $1,500 in 2007.
-
Global Health Action - Haitian Goat Project.
This
project supports "healthy people, healthy communities, a healthy
world" by donating a pregnant goat to families and farmers to
teach the value of raising goats as a source of money, food and
milk. People get training in workshops in their own community.
$180 buys a pregnant goat. In 2007, BLWC donated $360 for two
goats.
-
Nepalese Youth Opportunity
Foundation (NYOF). This project supports NYOF's mission of
buying piglets to give to parents who otherwise would have to
indenture their daughters to gain enough money to feed the rest of
the family. When raised, the piglets will provide an
equivalent sum of money and their daughters will be able to stay at
home with the rest of the family and attend school. In 2007,
BLWC donated $250 for two piglets.
-
CARE.
In 2007, BLWC donated $200 in support of sending young girls to
school for a year as part of CARE's Hope for Children
program.
-
Heifer
Project International - The Heifer Project Gift Ark offers shelter
to families battered by the storms of hunger and poverty that are
still raging around our world. A generous gift launches a
parade of farm animals on a voyage to wherever they're needed most.
The price of a Gift Ark includes the purchase/transport of quality
animals and the training/support Heifer Project gives recipients.
They learn how to maintain a sustainable source of food and income.
Contributions to the Gift Ark program are symbolic and represent a
contribution to the entire mission of HPI.
