INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS DEPARTMENT

The impoverished and the needy are all around us, both here in the United States and around the world. The International Affairs Committee is BLWC’s link to provide whatever assistance we can to alleviate some of the hunger, help destitute and deprived children, and raise awareness of these conditions. Not only does it help those people, it makes us feel better for doing so and projects a positive image of both America and the state of Georgia.

The International Affairs Department has projects promoting understanding and acceptance of all peoples and providing international aid.

Our three areas of concern are Outreach for Children, United Nations Program and Special Projects.

  • Operation Smile - Smiling is a difficult thing to do when a child has a harelip. BLWC supports this annually by providing a donation that will pay for the surgical removal of the deformity from one child.
  • Global Health Action - Haitian Goat Project - This project supports "Healthy people, Healthy communities, a Healthy World" in Haiti by donating a pregnant goat to families and farmers to teach the value of raising goats as a source of money, food and milk. People get training in workshops in their own community.
  •  Operation Christmas Child - Samaritan 's Purse - This project helps destitute and deprived children share the joy of Christmas. Club members donate shoeboxes filled with clothes, school supplies and hard candy to be distributed to poor children around the world.
  • Heifer Project International—Nepalese Youth Opportunity Foundation (NYOF) - This project supports NYOF Indentured Daughters Program Fund which buys piglets for families to raise and earn enough money to offset what they would have gotten from indenturing their children away from home. The family remains intact and the children are able to continue their schooling.

  • United Nations Food Day - Life for some families continues to be economically precarious. Rather than making this a 1-day event, donations of food, clothing and money are made to the North Gwinnett Cooperative Ministry throughout the year. This provides a helping hand by assisting in combating hunger and otherwise helping the needy.
  • Childreach - BLWC sponsors a young peasant girl in China by donating funds that help you, her family and the immediate community. Donations of school supplies and clothing are also part of this project.
  • CARE—BLWC supports CARE whose objectives are to fight poverty, and to combat families’ hunger, disease and the ravages of war.
