Tallulah Falls is the only school in the United States which is owned and operated by a state federation of
women's clubs. The Georgia Federation of Women's Clubs founded the school in 1909, largely through the efforts of Mrs. Mary Ann Lipscomb of Athens, Georgia, who also served as the school's first director.
“The school is called the ‘Light in the Mountains’ because ignorance is
darkness and knowledge is light.”
Mildred Seydell

Perhaps one should call it also the 'Flower of Unselfishness,' for
the reason that from the unselfish love of thousands of Georgia
clubwomen who have worked and prayed and given generously of time and
money has grown this school.
A small seed of a dream, it was
planted; it prospered. Now, it has blossomed into the blessed
beauty of an institution which is training boys and girls into upright,
intelligent, happy, healthy men and women. Though relatively small
in comparison with the majority of the school population, international
students are a very important component of the Tallulah Falls School
experience.
Today, as TFS operates well into the 21st century, we remain true
to our original mission to shine the light in the mountains. We no
longer primarily serve poor, isolated mountain children like those that
Mary Ann Lipscomb felt such compassion for in the early 1900s, but
ignorance is a disease which must be fought by every generation.
When the children leave TFS they are better prepared to cope with the
darkness of this world because of the power of the light they have
received while at our school.
